Stage 1 of 7

Awareness & education

Build a shared understanding of what AI can do, where it fails and who remains responsible.

Planning window

1–2 weeks of short sessions

Planning estimate, not a delivery promise
Who to involve

Sponsor · Process owners · Staff representatives · IT/privacy contact

Show practical tasks

Compare summarisation, extraction, drafting and classification on fictional examples. A language model generates plausible text; it does not guarantee factual correctness.

Teach verification

Demonstrate a confident but wrong answer, missing context and unsafe sharing. Require source checking, approved tools and escalation when output is uncertain.

Set an initial boundary

Document approved experimentation, forbidden information and a contact for incidents. Record training participation and a short comprehension exercise.

What you leave with

  • Shared glossary
  • Initial AI usage rules
  • Training and verification exercise

Common mistakes

  • Starting with a tool purchase
  • Using confidential data in demonstrations
  • Treating fluent output as a source

Before you move on

Assess your starting point yourself, or work through it together.
